There is a Market for Server Class Systems in Latin America!
November 19, 2002- Research Assistants at TUDLA, Technology User Database Latin America, have been keeping busy conducting interviews with over 4,000 Latin American IT managers decision-makers each month in order to reach our ultimate goal of building a business site panel with over 50,000 sites. Presently, over 20,000 have already been completed through in-depth interviews. Upon reviewing the total of these sites we have found that over 11,000 of these businesses are currently utilizing server class systems; considering that these sites include all types of businesses: small, medium and large, it means that over 50% of the Latin American market is running on server class systems!
Secondly, over 25% of the servers in use cost over $5,000 dollars, meaning that server systems are a significant investment on the part of Latin American businesses and they are willing to spend even more. Surprisingly enough most of these are either maintained by a third-party or in-house. Primary vendors show up 10% of the time as the service provider. It appears that when third-party suppliers are involved they sell total solution with maintenance service in the mix. Therefore, only 28% of these servers are purchased directly from a vendor, while 53% of servers are sourced through Third-Party suppliers, and 16% are acquired through corporate offices.
Another interesting fact is that most of the applications running on these servers are Business or Accounting based, which are usually easier to support In-House. However, with the advent of leading solutions like ERP, Data Warehousing, CRM and SCM we start to see the evolution of more technical oriented applications that tie in nicely with manufacturing applications, which are ultimately best suited to a value added proposition. So, as these applications grow in importance the shift will evolve to less in-house supplied services to more sophisticated/value-added solutions.
The vendors who stand to benefit the most are those whose brands are gaining importance in the region as well. Thus, seeing Compaq in the leading role is not a revelation to TUDLA, and now that they have formed the New HP, their combined share is over 44%, and IBM is the next closest competitor holding half that share. IBM could become a much more viable option based on their solutions approach to the market.
The charts below bear out all of the statistics relating to the findings shared in this release and they simply speak for themselves. And this is just one of the many different points of view you can take using and analyzing information using the TUDLA database, for example: it would be really interesting to take a slice of the last 90 days and compare it to the data presented today to determine exactly how fast this market is changing, but let us know what you would like to see and what would be useful to your business, TUDLA has the data and we can customize it to your needs.
