So the US market is still in a slump and PC shipments are slipping…
but what about Latin America?

(July 26, 2002-El Cajon) In a recent article from “Associated Press”, IDC one of the worlds' foremost authorities on the PC market, based on US shipment numbers, was quoted stating that sales for PC’s have declined in the second quarter for the fifth consecutive time. The article also noted that the PC market worldwide has declined .5% from a year ago.

Although, the worldwide market for PC's has significantly stalled, Latin America continues to make an impact with a continuous growth that has remained constant for the last five years.

TUDLA while reviewing its panel compiled of more than 25,000 businesses in Latin America uncovered some interesting facts. TUDLA determined that of businesses interviewed prior to July 2001 only 6% had a plan to purchase more PC’s, while between the period of July 2001 and January 2002, this figure went up to 11%. More importantly for this year, 2002 we have found that 23% of businesses have mentioned the plan to purchase PC’s.

It is important to point out that the average number of PC’s that businesses plan to purchase has gone from 57 prior to July of 2001, to 30 in the following period and now more recently has gone down to 25 PC’s on average. Although the number of these plans seems to be decreasing TUDLA found that this has to do with the fact that a greater number of small and medium businesses are now participating and including in their operations PC purchase plans, where as previously purchase plans were led by a much smaller number of large companies of over 50 employees. As a matter of fact, it is small and medium companies that represent the majority of the advancements in the technology industry in Latin America. These difficult to locate small and medium businesses can easily be located through the TUDLA panel.

Taking into consideration that the volume of PC’s planned to purchase is half of what they were a year ago and the percentage of sites that mention PC purchase plans in their operations is four times greater than the previous year, it means that the overall market has doubled. The TUDLA panel includes over 2 million PC’s that are installed in businesses throughout Latin America. Based on this information, TUDLA estimates a 7% growth factor over the next 12 months, which means that TUDLA’s panel should increase by more than 140,000 PC’s in the next year.

Therefore, low North American sales to some extent could be offset by Latin America. For those doing business in Latin America the figures demonstrated above should be extremely interesting. Latin America is a market that is viable today and growing very fast. All of this growth of technology use in businesses is assisting the consumer market as well, based on the fact that the average technology worker is making 75% more money then those in other occupations, schools are offering more computer courses; and major employers are even helping their employees to acquire PC’s, it is without a doubt that the Latin American market is primed for major growth.
