Microsoft vs. Linux
The Battle Heats Up
June 9, 2003 – El Cajon, Ca.- At the recent TI Americas Conference on Software and Multimedia held by CANIETI (National Chamber of Industry, Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology) sponsored by TUDLA and held on May 20-23rd in Tijuana, Baja California, TUDLA witnessed once again and reconfirmed the trends and changes the company reports regarding the Latin American market.
During the three-day event participants and guest speakers came from all over the Americas to join efforts and present general topics of interest to fellow IT connoisseurs. Among growing opportunities in the region, Linux Operating System was mentioned quite often. According to a guest speaker from Deloitte & Touche Mexico, Linux worldwide was reported to have grown 50% in 2002 and that for 2003 a 40% growth was projected. TUDLA’s stand in this regard based on statistics collected from more than 30,000 businesses that make up the TUDLA IT Decision-Maker Panel is that although the growth in Latin America is even more significant, the numbers are fairly minor.
From a total of 15,830 business sites with operating system installed, Linux is mentioned in 612 sites, which represents only 38%. However, in 2003 TUDLA has seen over a 50% increase and the pace continues to be gaining momentum, 93 sites have reported Linux year to date, which equals over 300 new Linux clients by year-end. This will result in a total of over 800 business sites by 2004 and thus, could represent a total share of 5% of all operating systems mentions. As the growth of Linux drops to 40% in the world in total, TUDLA predicts that Latin America will continue to grow at a 50% rate, outpacing the worldwide rate.
Considering the accuracy of statistics, TUDLA continues its commitment to gathering facts from our participating IT Decision-Maker panel members in order to spotlight important developments in the Latin-American market. Linux is yet another example of how competition can bring improvements to the rapidly growing Latin American Market.
