August 18,2003 – El Cajon, Ca - Participate in the "Broadband Connectivity Projects"complimentary Webinar sponsored by the Institute of the America August 26th at 1 PM PSTfeaturing Christian Nicolai, Chilean Under-Secretary of Telecommunications and gain greater knowledge over broadband data connectivity in rural and urban areas of the Americas.
The 1-hour session moderated by Bruce Sinclair, Technologies Industries Director for Info America will include guests from World Bank, Qualcomm and Tribal Digital Village Project and the focal point of this discussion is lessons learned and future of the "connectivity projects" in Chile.
"Is it possible to replicate already implemented connectivity projects, that use high speed wireless technologies, as models in the quest to define the most economically feasible means of providing remote broadband data access to the Internet? This question as well as others that relate to the present day situation of connectivity projects will be presented and discussed."
We encourage our readers to sign up to attend the free IOA Webinar. The shift to alternative data solutions leads to the move towards wireless data as well. What is driving this demand? The users need for alternative communications solutions that are more affordable and in many cases more reliable then what the incumbent service providers are offering. In addition to needing better connectivity at lower prices, there is also a need to adopt more sophisticated/mission critical applications to run their businesses.
Technology User Database, Latin America stays abreast of the developments of such technologies through research conducted with IT Decision Makers in the region. The data collected in TUDLA’s technology database makes it possible to track evolutionary processes that improve the bandwidth of small and medium businesses across the region. The improved quality of voice and data connections as well as increased bandwidth make the migration to mission-critical applications such as CRM even more viable.
The past 90 days of interviews conducted with the IT Decision-Maker Panel provide proof of the growing interest in IP and VPN solutions. The chart below compares two three-month interview periods done by the TUDLA Research Team, which reported a 480% increase of companies considering to move towards IP and VPN type networks.

From the 351 sites interviewed from 05/15 – 08/15 that mentioned plans or interests in installing IP and VPN, 22% also specified plans to install mission critical applications. Specialized Applications that are taking small and medium size businesses beyond just basic office functions are growing in importance across the Latin American and Caribbean region.
In the past 45 days, TUDLA has interviewed over 2150 businesses in this evolving region, of which almost 70% of these businesses qualified for the extensive TUDLA 2003 Survey that includes a detailed research on technology installed, including the top three applications installed and those they are planning to purchase in the future. Almost 98% of those we poled provided us with one or more applications they are currently running, of which 577 sites (approximately 29%) noted that there most significant application was created in-house or by them.
The number one brand mentioned was Microsoft, mentioned over 15% of the time as the main application provider. Others brands such as Oracle, SAP, SAS, Baan, Siebel, Peoplesoft, Progress were also mentioned among the top three brands being used at these various sites. Most interesting is that over 15% or about 200 of these businesses are planning new applications and most note a preferred brand such as JD Edwards, Oracle, SAP, etc.
The bottom line is that the applications market is growing strong in the Latin American and Caribbean Region, bandwidth enables applications and those who are well positioned to take advantage of this growth will be successful. This free collaborative session is a great way for all who are either struggling to find solutions in this market or who are working hard to create those solutions, to experience a real live situation first-hand.
